Micropol’s fiber optic solution in Wolfpack Drone Detection System by ArmaTech
The threat from drones is growing rapidly, with UAVs increasingly used for surveillance, smuggling, and hostile actions. As drones become more accessible and capable, the demand for advanced drone detection and countermeasures has intensified.
One such solution is the Wolfpack drone detector, a compact 360° direction–finding passive RF sensor capable of providing make/model information by searching for control signals and video feeds from the drones and the controller. Designed for tactical environments, the Wolfpack sensor provides 360-degree RF detection and real-time alerts, enhancing situational awareness on the ground. The system is delivered by ArmaTech AB, Sweden, offering a modern and mobile capability for drone threat detection.
Wolfpack is a passive drone detection system typically consisting of 3 sensors to triangulate the position of the drone. To cover an area as large as possible, the sensors can be located up to 3000 m apart. At these distances, fiber optics has a strong tactical advantage. Wireless communication is an option, but since the system is passive, this will give away your position, and it’s also possible to jam. By using Micropols connectors and cables, the system remains undetectable and very difficult to interfere with.
Micropol´s connectors and cables give our system the capability and capacity to deliver critical sensor data over long distances in any environment. The reliability, ruggedness, and ease of use of Micropol’s products make them an important and integral part of our system.
ArmaTech is using Micropols HD cable, designed to withstand more rugged environmental conditions and physical stresses compared to standard fiber optic cables. The cable is flexible yet highly resistant against wear and tear, you can even run it over by a vehicle!
To allow easy connection to the sensors and the fiber optic connection box, the fiber optic cable is equipped with FALCON expanded beam connectors to enable high-speed fiber optic communication between the different sensors in the system. The FALCON expanded beam´s market-leading insertion loss at -0,8dB (1310 nm) guarantees that even despite long distances and multiple cables between the sensors, the data link remains strong even in the most critical situations. The FALCON connector is designed to withstand thousands of matings, and each mating is done in an instant.
The deployment of the heavy-duty fiber optic cable between the different sensors is done using Micropol’s tactical backpack. The ergonomic backpack is specifically designed for field deployment of optical fiber in harsh surroundings. The backpack has a built-in crank handle that allows for easy rewinding of the cable when it’s time to relocate.
