Cutting-Edge Air Defense: How Micropol Fiber Optics Power Rheinmetall’s Skynex System

Rheinmetall is a leading, globally active, integrated technology group that develops and sells components, systems, and services for the security and civil industries. As Europe’s largest supplier of systems and equipment for ground forces, Rheinmetall is one of the Western world’s top three makers of military vehicles and munitions. It is also the global market leader in exhaust gas recirculation systems, solenoid valves, and electric pumps.

Micropol Fiberoptic and Rheinmetall have close cooperation in developing the Skynex system, Rheinmetall’s latest solution for short-range air defense.
Skynex is an advanced air defense system designed to protect against various airborne threats, including drones, missiles, and aircraft. With its open and modular architecture, it sets new standards in terms of flexibility and expandability.

The system consists of various sensors and radars that can be linked in a modular way to fit mission requirements. Micropol’s high-performance fiber optic military patch cables enable efficient data transmission for interconnections and between the different sensors and radars. The advanced Oerlikon X-TAR3D® Tactical Acquisition Radar provides the air picture, which is consolidated in the control node.

The high-resolution radar produces large data quantities that need to be transported instantly. Micropol’s unique high data transfer speed gives the system the high performance it needs. To ensure the highest possible transfer speed each individual military patch cable from Micropol is thoroughly tested and verified before delivery. Micropol’s military patch cables are available in a large variety of the most common connectors and have been tailored in length and configuration to match Rheinmetall’s needs.

Micropols military-grade cables are extra durable, capable of handling wide temperature ranges from -55 to +85°C and external stress. Available in standard or custom lengths, Micropol can meet tailored requirements and provide measurement reports prior to delivery.

The multiple radar units give the system a unique overview and ability to provide effective protection against multiple aerial threats such as drones and other swarm attacks. These types of threats have proved to be hard to handle efficiently.

“We highly value our long-standing collaboration with Rheinmetall and are proud that our products contribute to advanced air defense solutions like the Skynex system,” says Adam Svasek, Regional Sales Manager at Micropol Fiberoptic GmbH.

Since the Skynex system operates in tough conditions across the world the Micropol military patch cables are designed to cope with the harshest conditions. The cable is cut-resistant, and the connectors have metal other body to be able to handle subzero temperatures and external strain forces.

With over 35 years of expertise in developing and manufacturing passive fiber optics, Micropol strives to find the best solutions for our customers. The close collaboration with our customers as well as continuous research and development efforts ensure optimal solutions for our customers’ fiberoptic challenges.
