What does MIL-DTL-83526 20 & 21 stand for?

The expanded beam connectors at Micropol Fiberoptic

All Micropol Fiberoptic expanded beam products are manufactured according to MIL-DTL-83526 20/21. All expanded beam connectors are delivered with an individual measurement protocol to ensure the highest optical performance.

Micropol has two types of expanded beam connectors, FALCON and PROCON, which both have high quality and durability. The Micropol expanded beam connectors are battle proved according to MIL-DTL-83526 20/21 and are today used in multiple areas such as mining industries, field tactical communication, sensors, radar systems and civil communication in harsh environments.

The design of the MIL-DTL-83526/20&21 connectors

The MIL-DTL-83526/20&21 connectors are designed with optical lenses in the fiber-end which expands and collimate the transferred light, into a mating connector. This type of connector is called expanded beam connector and are used in harsh environments, though to the expanded light which have a larger transmission area then the original fiber core that often are less then 50 microns (0,005 mm). The expanded light makes the transmission withstand contaminations, dirt, water, and particles better compared to a physical fiber optic contact.

Why MIL-DTL-83526/20&21?

The connectors according to the MIL-DTL-83526 promise a consistent and predictable optical performance and have a design that can withstand military field applications.

Since fiber optic connectors play a crucial role in transmitting high-speed data and communication signals in military and aerospace systems, where reliability and performance are of utmost importance. MIL-DTL-83526 20/21 establishes the criteria that these connectors must meet to ensure they perform effectively in such applications.

From the start the MIL-DTL-83526 connectors was mainly developed for the defense industry, but the connectors are today used in several areas. Some of those areas are in applications for offshore and subsea, broadcasting, industrial and transportation communication, and energy productions.
